    Portland Homes

Portland is a rural community of 10,046 residents, located in northern middle Tennessee, just five miles south of the Kentucky border. The oldest local settlement in Portland is Fountain Head located a couple of miles south. It was originally called Richland. In 1859, the L&N Railroad opened the Nashville-Bowling Green route through Portland. The community grew around the depot. In 1887, there were two towns by the name of Richland in Tennessee, so it was later decided by Railroad administrators and the postal authorities that Richland would be renamed Portland to avoid this confusion. The new name was taken into effect on April 10, 1888. Portland was incorporated in April 1904 by legislation passed by the Tennessee Assembly. This settlement was founded 1792 by the James Gwin family. The economy has become a very industrial one, though there are still beautiful agricultural areas surrounding the city, with gently rolling hills, pastures and crops. This proud and progressive community offers affordable housing, many fine churches and civic organizations, great schools, and excellent parks and recreational facilities.

The median home value for this area is approximately $143,579, located directly north of Nashville off of I-65. It is nearly 25-30 minutes away from the center of downtown, and the primary flagship streets are Maple Street, White Road, Mitchellville-Oak Grove Road, Broadway, Old Gallatin Road, Portland White House Road, Dobbins Pike and S Russell Street. The community offers the following public school district options: 4 elementary (Portland Gateview, J W Wiseman, Clyde Riggs, Watt Hardison), 2 middle (Portland West, Portland) and 1 high (Portland) establishments. Locals delight in the annual Strawberry Festival, John Ford's Portland Ballroom, Hitching Post, Jen's Place, King Herald's, Portland Saddle Club, and Hot Mama's Roadhouse.
